How to Safely Return to the Gym After an Injury
Getting back into the gym after an injury can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. You’re eager to move again, but you don’t want to overdo it and end up right back where you started.
At Thrive Physio Erina, we help a lot of locals on the Central Coast navigate that tricky in-between stage — when you’re feeling almost ready but not quite sure what’s safe. Here’s what we tell our patients who are itching to get back to training.
1. Start Slower Than You Think You Need To
Even if your pain has settled, your body might not be ready to jump straight back into your usual load. Tissues need time to rebuild strength and tolerance.
Try starting at about 50–60% of your normal intensity, and see how your body responds over the next 24–48 hours. It’s better to build gradually than to push hard and set yourself back weeks.
2. Focus on Quality, Not Quantity
Good form beats big numbers every time. When you’re returning from injury, prioritise controlled, pain-free movement.
If you’re compensating or feeling “off,” it’s your body’s way of saying something still needs work — that’s where a physio can help fine-tune your movement and identify weak spots.
3. Don’t Skip Your Warm-Up (or Cool-Down)
A proper warm-up gets blood flowing to your muscles and joints, reducing stiffness and helping prevent re-injury.
Spend at least 10 minutes moving dynamically — think light cardio, mobility drills, and activation work. And after training, take time to stretch, foam roll, and recover properly.
4. Listen to Your Pain — But Don’t Fear It
A little muscle soreness is normal, but sharp or lingering pain is not. Pain is information, not something to ignore or panic about.
If you’re unsure whether what you’re feeling is normal, a quick check-in with your physio can make all the difference — we can test, modify, and keep your training on track.
5. Rebuild Strength and Confidence Gradually
Recovery isn’t just physical — it’s mental, too. Many people hold back out of fear of re-injury. Working with a physio can help rebuild that confidence safely, with exercises tailored to your body and your sport.
We’ll often guide people through a graded return-to-gym plan, ensuring each stage feels solid before progressing.
